The Congregation . . .     by Andreas Manessinger

Shadows of people in Vienna, Austria, gathering in front of a street sign, almost like a religious congregation

Only some days before, I had made an image in the very same place, at the same time of day and in the same morning light. I had even used it on my blog as an Image of the Day, thus there was no need to try it again. I can’t really say why I still did and what I hoped to achieve, but in any case it was harder than the last time, because I was in a hurry and constantly people were passing by and cast all sorts of shadows that I did not want. This is one such failed attempt, and only at home, when I saw it, it struck me that this had an interesting quality.

It looked like a gathering, and more, those shadows not only gathered, they gathered in front of this sign, almost like a religious cult. Thus came the title: The Congregation.

Signed prints available for $490 USD.

  1. I enjoy the shadows and the thinking behind the composition of the photograph. I do wish that there was no “editing” from Photoshop in the photograph because I feel it makes it harder to read what information is in photograph, including the shadows and background. I feel the photograph would be strong enough without any editing. All and all, I feel the composition fits the frame.
