San Antonio de Areco is a country town near the city of Buenos Aires in Argentina. It’s famous for its old fashioned bars and its gauchos, or Argentine cowboys. There’s a group of gauchos that meet every Friday lunchtime for a fogón, their name for lunchtime get together and asado (traditional Argentina barbecue). The fogón is arranged as much for the benefit of tourists as the gauchos, who are quite happy to talk to tourists and pose for photos.

This photo is a close-up of one of the gauchos, traditionally dressed and sitting on a tree stump. The baggy pants, knife and belt made of coins are all part of the gaucho’s traditional clothes.
