Not far into my journey with my digital cameras, I found myself wishing for more pixels to facilitate bigger prints. I wanted 50MP images, but couldn’t quite manage the $40K price tag of a Hasselbad. I began to wonder if my desktop scanner might prove a inexpensive stand-in that would allow me to achieve a higher pixel count without mortgaging my house. So I set out on a path to try creating images by scanning 3D objects, and ended up being pleasantly surprised by some of the results.

This image was created with an Epson 4990 scanner, using the 8×10 transparency adapter to achieve the translucency. I use scanner software to manipulate the “exposure” and control the light falloff. The original of this particular image is 3000 x 6100 pixels (53mb) in size. The jet black background results from leaving the scanner lid open when you scan. Anyone interested in knowing more about the process I’ve used can refer to this article in Popular Photography, June 2007.
