Sometimes the simplest subjects can make for some of the most beautiful photos. This flower was one of several in a pot in my Mum’s backyard. I took this photo by available overcast afternoon light, and used my then-new macro extension tubes. At that time I didn’t know how to set a narrower aperture with the non-auto tubes, so I was shooting wide open, and as such ended up with a very short depth of field. However, I think this was a happy accident, as the small DOF really helped create an almost abstract, minimalist photo of the flower’s centre.

  1. i owned an art gallery for a few years in los angeles, I could not keep any painting on the shelf for more than a week that was a close up of a flower like this picture. Speaking of paintings, this shot really does look like a painting.

  2. Very interesting, thank you.

  3. This image has an interesting composition when you consider that the usual way to take a macro (or close-up) of a flower would be to focus on the centre and allow the outside edges to go out of focus by using a larger aperture value.

  4. Wow, really awesome photography. The details of the flower and it’s color is so rich. Great image. Its a wonder that flowers can be so small but it gives out such a glow around the place it is.

  5. That’s a really cool flower. Also really cool snap :) ) Good work with the snap. Looks really awesome. Macro can really give much detail to an image.

  6. Wow, that’s a really lovely flower. Certainly looks awesome in close-up. I can just imagine how a bunch of these flowers will bloom out :) ) Thanks a lot for the picture. Cheers
