Yellow and Purple Flower . . . by Neil Creek

Sometimes the simplest subjects can make for some of the most beautiful photos. This flower was one of several in a pot in my Mum’s backyard. I took this photo by available overcast afternoon light, and used my then-new macro extension tubes. At that time I didn’t know how to set a narrower aperture with the non-auto tubes, so I was shooting wide open, and as such ended up with a very short depth of field. However, I think this was a happy accident, as the small DOF really helped create an almost abstract, minimalist photo of the flower’s centre.

i owned an art gallery for a few years in los angeles, I could not keep any painting on the shelf for more than a week that was a close up of a flower like this picture. Speaking of paintings, this shot really does look like a painting.
Very interesting, thank you.
This image has an interesting composition when you consider that the usual way to take a macro (or close-up) of a flower would be to focus on the centre and allow the outside edges to go out of focus by using a larger aperture value.
