Sunrise Over Kent Gate . . . by Dawn LeBlanc

I recently went on a one-week long trip to Quebec City with a group of photographers from New York, Wales, and Toronto. We rented a home in the old town, and for the most part, walked around exploring Quebec, which is celebrating its 400th anniversary this year. The people were friendly, the weather warm, and the photo opportunities many and varied.
I thought I was on a holiday, but I was deluded. The group I was with were very keen, and that included being out at midnight to take street shots and being up at 3:30am to catch the sun as it rose over the city. But it all made for a collection of much more memorable shots for all of us.
This is a shot of the sun rising over the Kent Gate near the Plains of Abraham. It was shot with a Canon 70-200 f/2.8 lens, 1/2000 sec, f/4 at 200m.

Dawn,
this is incredibly beautiful. It looks very much like from a fairy tale or a fantasy story. Not exactly tolkienesque, more … southern. Great composition.
Hi Dawn,
Kudos in your early rising. Many times images are posted as “fine art” but do not meet the criteria. It is really an interesting image. There is some vignetting. I’ve experienced this with wider angle focal lengths but rarely on T-photos. Did you have a lens hood on your lens or is its coverage on the sensor tight? Another question: Perhaps your vignetting was caused by an appliance on the front of the lens. Did you use a matte box and a graded filter?
Pete
Thanks Andreas and Pete! To Pete, I introduced the vignetting in post-processing I’m afraid–I was going to remove it, but kind of liked it, maybe wrongfully so. It seemed to me it brought some depth to the image, but perhaps I should have used a lighter hand. I appreciate the time you both took to write comments. I will revisit the image and take another look at the vignette! ~~ regards, dawn
Dawn,
Thank you for taking time to answer my questions. An apology for thinking this was a technical issue. Applying the vignette as part of your vision of this work should go without question or explanation.
Cheers,
Pete
