I’m a big fan of advancing shadow, it’s a theme I often revisit while out photographing. This scene was along the Main Boulder route as I drove to the Natural Bridge here in Montana. The clean, sharp edge of light gets me every time, and on this occasion it was no different. The shot had a high potential of being ‘blown out’, but a little drop in my exposure helped capture the scene with detail. I’m curious how the details show in the dark shadow across the middle of the frame to other viewers. I didn’t set a color profile for this shot and wonder if it will have an adverse effect on other monitors. Let me know if you see any weird coloration in there…

  1. Hi Cody,
I’m using an inexpensive 17” flat panel monitor, about 4 years old now. Your photo is showing vivid greens, sage tones with a hazy sky. The drifting clouds come through. But that foreground just pops with the trees. It looks very good from here. Good balance.

  2. Hey Steve, thanks for your feedback on how this image displays, I greatly appreciate it. I’m glad to hear it displays well for you, your noting the colors and tones is key because you’re describing them exactly how I see them on my monitor. That you picked up on the sage in the upper-right corner is a huge point, as the values differ so much from the foreground. This is the result of cultivated, irrigated farm land down low vs. the sage brush and wild grass covered hillside that depend on nature alone for their supply of moisture. Again, your feedback is fantastic, thanks for taking the time to comment.
