… that I got up this mountain. Minutes later, and I would have missed a fantastic sundown. This is Dobratsch, a mountain in Carinthia, Austria, and I am at 2166 meters above sea level. It is February 16, 2008. The sun has just dipped down below the horizon and I am looking south-east. There is a church on this mountain top, one of two actually, and since 1692 this is the highest church on any mountain in Europe. When I arrived at the summit, the last visitors just left. “You are late”, they said. “Better late than never”, I replied.

  1. Wonderful image. I love the color and the mood. Feels lonely and yet not alone.

  2. Wow! That’s an incredible shot Andreas! I hope there was a carpark nearby, cos I would be terrified descending a mountain on foot after sunset! Beautifully done.

  3. Not really. We had full moon, the way down was well prepared, and I had always my headlamp :)

  4. Thanks for the nice photo and description. I would like to visit this remote high altitude church.

  5. Wooow, Seriously nice picture!
Ive been there like 4/5 times before, but never when there was snow! :o
I always go to Austria in the summer. And i live climbing up the Dobratsch with some friends.

    Nicely done!

  6. Now that’s a really stunning shot. My first impression was simply WOW!!! The snow capped mountains are really an awesome sight. I would love to spend a week or two in that lonely cabin :) Awesome snap. Cheers

  7. PhotoRetouch, believe me, you don’t want to spend a week there. It’s a church :)
