The 300 foot sand cliffs above Black’s Beach provide a great opportunity for hang gliders and paragliders to utilize the updrafts. From atop these cliffs, the towns of La Jolla and Del Mar can be seen. On a good breezy day, the area surrounding the gliderport looks like this photo, with multiple gliders in the air at any given time. Most of the thrill seekers are paragliders (the ones with the parachutes), but you’ll see some hang gliders out there every once in a while. And what happens if these folks lose their current and drift down toward the base of the cliff? Well, first they have to hike through a nude beach, then they have to haul their equipment up a really long and steep trail.
