One of my favorite scenes in Yellowstone NP is this simple hilltop, shaped and changed forever by forest fires. I can only imaging how these few trees were spared…uphill from what was obviously a major blaze. And the ‘Lone Tree General’ at the top, standing back surveying the lines, sending orders, bearing witness. At least that’s how my mind sees it…

I made this image during a weekend off from my 2006 Digital WakeUp Call tour. We were traveling up the west coast - from San Diego to Seattle, Washington - and caught up with friends in Oregon. We took a day trip to the Oregon coast just past Cannon Beach - the views were tremendous! I did a slight “fiddle” in Photoshop to perk up the blacks, but this is very close to exactly what the scene looked like. Camera Specs: Canon 20D fitted with 17-85mm lens at 17mm, F18 @ 1/640 second at ISO 800.

I don’t exactly know what the blur on the right side is, I guess it must have been another sign post, but I have used it along with the post on the left to frame the image, to create a stronger perspective.

A detailed shot of a lily as it withered away. It was gorgeous and full a day earlier, but more interesting at this time. The texture that came to be was remarkable and the sheen on the petals was difficult to catch. Often I think flowers become much more captivating as they pass on in life than in all too common shots (of which I’m guilty of) of them in full bloom.

This was done with a scanner, my favorite and cheap large format substitute. The original is approx 8000px square. I am starting a series by request of some very large prints in duotones. This may be one of those included. Let me know what you think. I typically don’t like or do flowers in black and white or toned images, so this is new to me.

This photo was taken in Chascomus, a quiet country town in Argentina, some 120km from the capital Buenos Aires. The buildings in the centre of the town are over a hundred years old and built in a traditional Spanish colonial style. The house numbers are displayed on simple plaques, just like this one.

I took this photo while on a business trip in Switzerland. The town of Neuchatel presented me with a lot of colorful graffiti scenes, and this one sticks out as one of my favorites. The scene just struck me as curious because of the shiny new scooter parked against a garage door ridden with graffiti.

For me, this was an exercise in design and color. I loved the original arabesque lines and the deep desert like colors. After a little image manipulation in Photoshop, I had the result I wanted. Camera specs; Canon 30D fitted with 17-85mm lens at 47mm, F5.6 @ 1/6 second - hand held, ISO 1250. Enjoy! -David

Some years ago Vienna has begun to replace its tramway trains with a new design. It’s still not complete, but at least you see many of these trains now. They have an extremely low floor, and therefore they look a little like shiny, metallic worms creeping through the streets. Not unpleasant though, not at all.
