The northwest of Argentina was the first part of the country colonised by the Spanish and contains the oldest buildings in the country. The towns and villages here are old. This doorway is old. But the sense of time runs deeper than the architecture. People have been living in these valleys since before the Incas and their ancient traditions linger on in the form of traditional ceremonies, fiestas and beliefs.

  1. Andrew,

Great shot. I lived in Argentina for two years as a missionary. You captured thoughts and memories that have been dormant in me for years.

    Thanks.

  2. Lovely shot, gritty and moody. Love the contrast.

    Gary.

  3. What a fantastic picture. I love the character reflected in the aged wood and the scared stone. I wonder how many feet have passed through this entrance?

  4. Perfect exposure, really makes the door ‘glow’.

  5. Indeed typical for Purmamarca, and many other places in Argentina. Unfortunately maintenance is not a top priority, and many historic buildings are torn down every year, or just collapse.
