Los Principios Almacen & Bar, San Antonio de Areco, Argentina . . .     by Andrew Gibson

Los Prinicipios, an almacen (grocery shop) and bar in the town of San Antonio de Areco, in Buenos Aires province, Argentina. Los Principios is one of the oldest bars in the town, it was established in 1918 and moved to this location in 1920. San Antonio de Areco is located 110km from the city of Buenos Aires and is known for it’s colonial buildings and Guachos, the cowboys of Argentina.

We walked past this store and when I looked inside I just knew I had to take a photo. I asked the owner if it was ok and set up my camera and tripod. I had to use a slow shutter speed (two seconds) because the light was extremely low. The attention to detail and care that has gone into maintaining the almacen is incredible. The tins and goods on the shelves are all brands that are no longer available. It really was like stepping back in time.

Everything in the photo is exactly how I found it. I didn’t move or rearrange everything. It was all there waiting for me, even the bike and the cat (on the right if you didn’t see it).

  1. The red bike is a perfect fit with form and function in a canvas of very organized shelving. Superb capture!

  2. Man oh man, absolutely amazing. I hope I can take a photograph that good one day.
