Zig Zag . . . by Brian Auer

This scene caught my eye initially because of the horizontal lines broken up by the vertical lines of the stairs. I was standing normal to the wall, and the stairs were coming off at about a 45 degree angle to the left. So I framed the shot to create a symmetric pattern along the diagonal, trying to leave the same amount of stairs and wall while centering one of the vertical lines.
During post-processing, I really pulled out the textures and played on the contrast between the steps and the wall. The interesting thing about this image is that it looks different at various viewing distances. Up close, you notice all the texture. Step back, and you see the strong horizontal lines. Step back further, and you see the symmetric light and dark shapes separated by the zig zag.

Wow, Brian! Great capture! Love the composition… Good eye for catching this, too!
Thank you Shawn, very much appreciated!
Brian, you really did a great job with this image. It really is about the composition, the details, and the contrast. There are an abundant ways to determine whether a photograph is truly good or great. I think that my favorite “test” is the time test. How much time did I gaze at the image before blinking and allowing my eyes to rest and refocus. The longer the time, usually the better. I can tell you that this image held my attention for an exceptionally long minute.
Wow.. I really like this one.
Thanks Damien, I think I find myself doing the same “time test” with the various images I look at. You’re right, in that some images just have a tendency to keep your attention for a ridiculous amount of time. I’m glad that you found yourself getting stuck looking at this one. Unfortunately, the 800 pixel image doesn’t do it the justice it deserves — it’s a pretty crazy image to view on a large print!
HI JUST WANTED TO SAY NICE CAPTURE … LOVE IT XXX
Great picture! I love the contrast between the dark wall and the light of the stairs.
That’s very interesting, quite cool. Certainly makes you look at it a few times, quite original. Good luck with your work.
